The Brownleigh Building Wins a Sir Walter Raleigh Community Appearance Award
October 26, 2009 –
BBH Design was the proud recipient of a 2009 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance. It received the award in the Sustainable Design category for the Brownleigh Building, which houses the firm’s architecture studio and Umstead Park United Church of Christ. BBH Design renovated the building using ‘green’ principles to demonstrate its commitment to providing sustainable and healthy environments. The Brownleigh Building is the first architecture office and church in the Southeast to receive New Construction Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
This is the first year the Raleigh City Council presented awards in this category. The awards for sustainable design were given to projects that demonstrate land design, architecture and building principles which exemplify an integrated approach to resource conservation and respect the existing features of the site and surrounding community.
The Sir Walter Raleigh awards were presented on October 7 by the Raleigh City Council to 17 individuals or groups that have made outstanding contributions to the character, environment and appearance of Raleigh.
